Description
Very few children in rural areas in Zambia are able to complete High School education because of the cost. On top of this in the Zambezi Valley where we live there are only a few High Schools so some children must go off to Boarding Schools which increases the cost further; and once again it is the orphans who suffer the most.
Boarding school facilities are over crowded, conditions unhygienic and often students have to prepare and cook their own meals in primitive conditions and do their own laundry.
Orphan girls at boarding schools sometimes become involved in prostitution in order to pay their fees, or even to buy food and toiletries.
Once we became aware of these facts we were deeply disturbed by the plight of these orphaned girls. So after much prayer we came up with the NextGen Project.
Working together with a local church ministry in Lusaka, a dormitory facility will be built within walking distance of a public High School. It will provide safe, secure and homely accomodation plus dining area for, initially, 10 girls. The girls will be under the supervision of a christian House Mother and provided with three meals a day. The local pastor will be involved in providing spiritual and emotional guidance and council for the girls.
The NextGen Project will be extended to include skills training such as sewing and tailoring, home economics, community health care, pre-school teacher training etc.
This means that in a very practical way the NextGen Project will be investing in the future of young orphaned girls who will become better equipped for their own lives and will positively impact future generations as well!
