Mbarara Childrens Centre
Location
Mbarara, South West Uganda
Project Co-Ordinator
Pastor Willy Tumwine, Nigel and Kathy Harding
Finance Required
Our biggest need now is for regular donors to sponsor the feeding and education of the boys.
Description
As a former ‘street kid’ himself, Pastor Willy Tumwine (tum-wee-nay) has a
deep love for these children. His church have been actively
reaching out, providing regular meals for about fifty boys and
accommodation in the church itself for some of them. They have a
greater vision though for a Children’s Centre. This centre would provide
a feeding programme for up to 200 children with regular nutritious
meals. Individual ‘dwellings’ would house up to 10 children together
with Christian house-parents who can provide much-needed love and
nurturing. Pastor Willy would also like to provide
some basic schooling and workshops for the
boys so they can be taught some practical
skills, therefore increasing their employment
prospects in the future.
Many of the children are
emotionally scarred by what they have
experienced and part of the vision is to provide
good quality Christian counselling to help the
healing process.
Progress
January 07 - The land has been acquired, plans are being finalised and the first phase of development, the kitchen and toilets, should be started this summer. We have had many obstacles in the way of starting this project. Please pray that everything can go ahead now as planned.
May 07 - The start of the building work on the centre for Street Kids is still being frustrated by local bureaucracy. Please pray for a breakthrough; there are many children still out on the street or in makeshift accommodation whilst those in authority procrastinate.
August 08 - We have fully raised the £20,000 that we needed for the initial buildings for the site and construction should start soon. As development progresses though we would like to raise further finances for extra units on the site such as a Vocational Training Centres.
